Chelme mou

Part of the content is temporarily available only in Greek

The song is about immigration and impending emigration referring to the mass immigration of Greeks to the USA that began in the last decade of the 19th century.
Panagiotis Kounadis mentions the following (
2010: 6): "The end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th must be considered one of the most difficult and painful periods in the history of modern Greece. The financial problems that accumulated after the raisin crisis, which caused the country to go bankrupt in 1893 and the imposition of the International Financial Control (IFC), created, in combination with the defeat by the Turks in the war of 1897, desperate conditions for the farmers, especially the ones in the Peloponnese. [...] usury was uncontrollable both in cash, where the interest reached 20%-30%, as well as in kind, given that the interest in products such as butter and milk sometimes reached 70%-80%.
At the same time, the propaganda of the steamship companies and their agents, who promised the unfortunate farmers the fulfillment of all their dreams in the new 'Promised Land', was intensifying; it is obvious why fleeing to America seemed like the only solution. Thus, as early as 1893, the great immigration wave to the USA began at an ever-increasing rate, which lasted until 1924, when the new immigration law which stipulated a controlled number of citizens entering from each country was implemented. During this period, it is estimated that about half a million Greeks, the vast majority of them being young men, left the country. [...] The US Immigration Service's data on the proportion of immigrants compared to other countries and their populations is overwhelming: Greeks held the first place with 9.5 departures per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by the Italians with 5.8."
