This recording features the song “Good Night” (or “Reich mir zum Abschied noch einmal die Hände”), adapted with Greek lyrics by Paul Menestrel (Giannis Chidiroglou). It comes from the German film “Viktoria und ihr Husar”, directed by Richard Oswald and produced by Roto Film GmbH on behalf of Aaga-Film AG, starring Michael Bohnen, Friedel Schuster and Iván Petrovich. The film was released in Germany in October 1931.
The film is one of six film and television productions (see here) based on the three-act operetta “Viktoria und ihr Husar”, with music by Paul Abraham (see here and here) and a German libretto by Alfred Grünwald and Fritz Löhner-Beda; all three of Jewish origin. The song “Good Night” is performed as a duet in the second act of the operetta by the heroine Viktoria and her beloved, the Hussar captain Stefan Koltay (for the plot, see here).
The German libretto is based on the play “Viktória” by the Hungarian Imre Földes. The libretto of the first “Hungarian” version of the operetta is attributed to Földes and Imre Harmath. The work premiered on February 21, 1930 at the Király Színház in Budapest. The “German” version, in a translation and adaptation of the libretto by Grünwald and Löhner-Beda, was first performed at the Neues Theater in Leipzig on July 7, 1930, and on August 15 of the same year it was staged at the Metropoltheater in Berlin. On December 23 it was presented for the first time in Austria, at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. Performances followed at other theatres in Europe and Latin America, including the London Palace Theatre on September 17, 1931, under the title Victoria and her Hussar, and the Moulin Rouge in Paris on December 16, 1933, under the title “Victoria et son hussard”.
“Good Night”, like other songs from the operetta, enjoyed international success, as reflected in numerous recordings in the historical discography, in different languages, forms and locations. Among them:
